warp removal & flattening

Flattening records involves a controlled thermal and pressure-based process to eliminate warps. The method works by carefully heating a warped record to a temperature where the vinyl becomes slightly pliable, then cooling it under uniform pressure so the disc returns to a flatter shape, all without damaging the grooves. This process is much more precise and safer than improvised techniques such as glass plates in the oven or stacking records under heavy books, which can deform grooves, damage labels, easily ruining a record.

Records are made primarily from polyvinyl chloride compounds that soften when exposed to heat. Deformation can also be caused by other factors including sunlight, tight shrink wrap, uneven storage pressure, shipping conditions and pressing errors during manufacturing.

Warp types vary in severity and shape, and while our process has a very high success rate on most types of warps, there are some extreme cases where no amount of processing will achieve the desired result. That said, we're always up for a challenge!

Prices for flattening are as follows, however if you have a significant amount of records to do, please get in touch as a great deal can always be done.
